Sunday, Mar. 6, at 10:00 - Church services in memory of the Col. Oskars Kalpaks Battalion and Students Company who fought in the war for Latvian Independence (1918-1921). Procession by Latvian student fraternities and sororities at the Yonkers Church. The church services will be complemented by soprano Laila Liepiņa accompanied by Dace Aperāns on piano. This will be followed by a program where themes from Latvian soldier and academic songs will be played by pianist Vilnis Klīmanis, lettonus. The academic address (in Latvian) will be presented by the Deputy Chief of Mission and Counsellor of the Embassy of Latvia to the USA in Washington Juris Poikāns, talavus. A reception will follow with hors d'oeuvres provided by the Latvian Sororities Group of New York. All are invited.
Later, at the same location - Sunday, Mar. 6, at 15:00 - Benefit Concert with distinguished Latvian National Opera and New York Metropolitan Opera tenor Aleksandrs Antoņenko at the Yonkers Church. Aleksandrs Antoņenko will be accompanied by George Boyer on piano. Proceeds will benefit the "Figaro" opera studio in Rīga run by Viesturs Gailis. A reception with refreshments will follow in the church's Chandelier Hall on the second floor. Admission by donation starting at $50 for adults, $25 for students. Donor cards start at $100.
