Apply for or renew your Latvian passport here in New York!
15.07.2010

The Latvian parliamentary (10. Saeimas) elections will be held on Saturday October 2, 2010. This date may now seem to be very far into the future but now is the time to make sure you have a valid and current Republic of Latvia citizen's passport which is required for voting. An expired passport or other documents will not be acceptable. The new Latvian passports now being issued contain biometric information, which requires passport applicants to appear before consular personnel. To facilitate the process for Latvian citizens living abroad Latvian government representatives will visit cities in the USA and Canada including New York during which time mobile passport workstations will be used to accept passport applications outside of the usual consular location.

In New York the mobile passport workstations will operate at the following times and locations:

Tuesday July 27 from 09:00 to 13:00 and from 14:00 to 18:00 - at the Long Island Church Parsonage (next to the church at 35 Beaumont Drive);
Wednesday July 28 from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 15:00 to 19:00 -
at the Yonkers Church;
Thursday July 29 from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 15:00 to19:00 - at the Brooklyn parsonage

It would be very desirable if everyone who wishes to take advantage of the mobile passport workstation when it visits your city to register in advance with the Latvian consulate. To find out what information is required and get the registration form please visit: www.latvia-usa.org and click on "10. Saeimas vēlēšanas". On this page you will find several documents. Among them:  Informacija par pasu noformesanu izmantojot mobilas pasu darbstacijas ("Information about passport issuance using mobile passport workstations"). other documents describe what Latvian passports are acceptable for voting in the upcoming parliamentary elections ("10. Saeimas vēlēšanas"), about polling stations that will be set up in the USA, and about voting by mail. There will be a polling station in New York at the Latvian mission to the UN in Manhattan! So, if you are a citizen of Latvia you have no reason not to vote.
Please direct any and all questions  to the consular section of the Embassy of Latvia in Washington, DC: consulate.usa@mfa.gov.lv tel. (202) 328-2840. General information about the elections, relevant laws, candidate lists and other information (mostly in Latvian) may be found on the web site of the Central Election Commission: www.cvk.lv.
