Latvian Summer Camp in the Catskills
For more than fifty years the Latvian
Evangelical Lutheran Church of New York has been operating a summer camp in Upstate
New Yorks Catskill Mountains. Located in a quiet, natural mountain setting approximately two hours
north of New York City, the camp has seen more than 3,000 Latvian children pass
through its gates. The camp embraces Latvian children,
regardless of whether they are members of the New York Latvian Ev. Lut.
congregation, another Lutheran congregation elsewhere, or are not members of
any church. We look forward to seeing you in the Catskills!
1. & 2. periods. These two week sessions are for children ages 7-15 fluent in Latvian. The
program consists of sports, singing, folk dancing, playing the Latvian
instrument Kokle, hiking, church services, religious and Latvian
studies, theatre, swimming, dances and other activities. Camp director Ieva Alversons can provide more information!
Valodas
periods. This program is the same as 1. & 2. periods, but most activities
are in English. Here campers learn about Latvian culture and heritage. More information
can be provided by Valodas perioda director Elissa Millers.
Īkšķīši. A week-long program designed for children ages 2-6. The programs are similar to those of 1. & 2. periods, but geared to this younger age group, and campers are accompanied by their parent(s) / grandparents. There are four Īkšķīši sessions (A-D). These sessions are designed for families who are speaking Latvian in the home. It is expected that one of the caregivers accompanying the child be a fluent Latvian speaker, as all activities are conducted in Latvian. Camp directors Linda Zalite, Valda Grinbergs and Inga Miemis-Garbarino can be contacted for further information.
Valodas Īkšķīši ("Little Thumbs") A week long program for children ages 2-6 accompanied by their parent(s) / grandparents. All activities are conducted in English; campers learn about Latvian culture and heritage. For more information, contact camp directors Ieva Alversons and Laila Gansert.
